Is tap water healthy?
In many countries in the Western world, tap water is generally healthy and safe to drink. It is strictly controlled and must meet high quality requirements to be free of harmful substances and pathogens.
Tap water is a good source of hydration and contains essential minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Tap water has a much lower carbon footprint compared to bottled water because it does not require plastic bottles and transport is minimal. Tap water is much cheaper than bottled water.
In Belgium and many other countries, tap water is strictly regulated and monitored by authorities such as the government and water companies. Water utilities regularly test for a wide range of contaminants, including bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, pesticides and other chemicals. Tap water is treated to make it safe for consumption. This may include filtration, chlorination and other purification methods.
In older buildings, lead pipes may still be present, which can pose a risk. It is important to check whether your home has lead pipes and replace them if necessary. Although rare, local contamination can occur. This is usually quickly addressed by water companies.
Tap water in Belgium is of high quality and safe to drink. It is important to stay aware of any local warnings and check your home for possible outdated pipes. Overall, drinking tap water is a healthy, environmentally friendly and cost-efficient choice.
