Is COVID-19 dangerous for newborns?
COVID-19 can be potentially dangerous for newborns, although the risks are generally lower than for adults, especially older adults and those with underlying health conditions.
Many newborns who become infected with COVID-19 show mild or no symptoms. Symptoms in infected newborns may include difficulty breathing, fever, lethargy, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. In rare cases, newborns may develop more severe symptoms that require medical attention, such as respiratory support or intensive care.
Newborns with underlying health conditions or who were born prematurely may be at higher risk for more serious complications from COVID-19. The risk of vertical transmission (from mother to child during pregnancy) is low, but possible. Transmission can also occur after birth through close contact with infected people.
Pregnant women are encouraged to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Vaccination during pregnancy can help pass antibodies to the baby through the placenta, which may provide some protection. Strict adherence to hygiene measures such as handwashing, wearing masks, and limiting contact with potentially infected people can help protect newborns.
Newborns who test positive for COVID-19 should be closely monitored by medical professionals to ensure any symptoms are treated promptly.
