Are chia seeds healthy?
Chia seeds are widely regarded as healthy due to the many nutrients and health benefits they provide. But do they really make a difference to our health?
Chia seeds are an excellent source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based form of omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for heart health and inflammation. A serving of chia seeds (about 28 grams) contains about 11 grams of fiber, which contributes to healthy digestion and a longer feeling of fullness.
They are rich in essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which contribute to bone health. Due to their high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids, chia seeds can help lower triglycerides, lower LDL cholesterol, and increase HDL cholesterol. However, their effect on cholesterol is not enough to prevent heart problems in people with high cholesterol.
The fiber in chia seeds can help regulate blood sugar levels by slowing the rate at which carbohydrates are absorbed into the blood. However, people with diabetes or insulin resistance will not be able to treat their condition sufficiently with chia seeds.
Chia seeds can help prevent overeating by providing a long-lasting feeling of satiety. However, it will not be enough to lead to weight loss without a rigorous diet.
