Can determining our microbiome help us become healthier?

The microbiome is a complex ecosystem of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microbes, that live in and on the human body. The importance of the microbiome plays a role in certain aspects of human health. Here are some of the key features and benefits.

The microbiome helps break down complex carbohydrates, fiber and other nutrients that the human body cannot digest on its own. Certain bacteria in the gut microbiome produce essential vitamins such as vitamin K and some B vitamins.

The microbiome also plays a role in the development and regulation of the immune system. It helps the immune system to distinguish between harmful and harmless substances. The microbiome provides protection by preventing colonization of pathogenic (disease-causing) microorganisms and stimulating the production of antimicrobials. It also plays a role in protecting against disease, preventing infections and regulating our weight and sugar levels. Furthermore, it would also play a role in our mental health through the gut-brain axis.

Scientific research is still ongoing. We now know that the composition of the microbiome can be linked to certain conditions. But interventions on the microbiome have not yet shown that they can prevent or cure certain diseases. At this time it is not useful to have the microbiome determined by the GP or by peripheral laboratories.
