What is the arbovirus and can a tiger mosquito infect you?

Arboviruses are a group of viruses transmitted by arthropods such as mosquitoes, ticks and sand flies. There are several known arboviruses that can cause disease in humans, such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya and West Nile virus.

The tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is one of the mosquitoes known for transmitting arboviruses. The tiger mosquito is recognizable by its black and white striped legs and a white stripe on its back. This mosquito is aggressive during the day and can bite both indoors and outdoors.

The tiger mosquito can transmit dengue and chikungunya. Dengue is a viral infection that can cause fever, rash, and severe joint and muscle pain. Chikungunya causes fever and severe joint pain, often accompanied by muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash. Zika is known to cause birth defects such as microcephaly when pregnant women become infected.
