Can our drinking water be contaminated with COVID-19?

Based on current scientific insights and evidence, the risk of COVID-19 contamination in drinking water is considered extremely low.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that there is no evidence that the COVID-19 virus is transmitted through drinking water or has been found in treated drinking water supplies. Standard water treatment processes that use filtration and disinfection, such as those of municipal treatment plants, should inactivate the virus responsible for COVID-19.

Although treated municipal water is safe, caution should be used around untreated water sources. To ensure safety, proper preparation and handling is recommended. Although the risk from drinking water is low, good hygiene practices, such as washing hands regularly and using clean water for cooking, are important to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other pathogens.
