Is a pneumococcal vaccination useful against COVID-19?

It is known that many viral respiratory infections predispose us to pneumococcal pneumonia. However, there are currently few COVID-19 patients known in which pneumococci cause severe pneumonia. The COVID-19 pandemic is therefore certainly no reason to vaccinate against pneumococci.

Vaccination against pneumococcal disease is recommended in adults with an immune system disorder, adults with chronic heart, lung, liver or kidney disease and in healthy adults aged 65 years or older. Pneumococcal vaccination can cause side effects such as fever and malaise, and therefore misinterpretation as possible COVID-19 symptoms. It is therefore better not to administer this vaccine during the corona crisis.
