Can urine suddenly turn black?

It can happen that urine turns black, although it is rare. This phenomenon can be caused by various conditions and factors.

Certain medications, such as methyldopa and some antibiotics, can change the color of urine. Consumption of certain foods or dyes can also sometimes influence the urine color.

Several medical conditions can lead to black urine, including hemoglobinuria, melanuria, and alkaptonuria. Rhabdomyolysis, a condition in which muscle tissue breaks down and myoglobin is released, can also cause the urine to turn dark.

If someone notices that their urine has turned black, it is important to seek immediate medical attention to identify the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
