Are lactoferrin and colostrum extremely strong antivirals?

There are people who claim that lactoferrin and colostrum are extremely strong antivirals. They claim that this means that breast milk protects the newborn child against all infections. This is manifestly wrong. The newborn child mainly obtains its immunity through the transfer of IgG antibodies via the placenta. This will mainly happen in the 3rd trimester.

After birth, breast milk can support immunity with IgA antibodies. The lactoferrin in breast milk does not make a substantial contribution to the newborn's immune system.

Lactoferrin and colostrum have antiviral properties that have shown promise in several studies. They may contribute to protection against viral infections through several mechanisms, including direct antiviral activity and strengthening the immune system. However, it is important to emphasize that while these compounds have potential antiviral benefits, more clinical research is needed to fully understand their effectiveness and safety.
