Is Ayurveda a valuable treatment?
Ayurveda is a traditional medicine that originated in India and has been practiced for thousands of years. Ayurveda focuses on balancing body and mind, which for some people would be a valuable and comprehensive approach to health and wellness.
Many Ayurvedic treatments use herbs and natural products. The scientific support for their effectiveness is very limited to non-existent. For example, turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, but its effective effect on pain and mobility is very small.
For some chronic conditions, such as stress-related illnesses, digestive problems and certain skin diseases, Ayurvedic treatments are said to provide relief.
There is virtually no evidence that Ayurvedic treatments are effective. There is a lack of large-scale, rigorous scientific studies proving the effectiveness and safety of many Ayurvedic treatments.
Some Ayurvedic herbs and treatments may have side effects or interact with conventional medications. It is important to consult a qualified Ayurvedic doctor and inform your regular doctor of any alternative treatments you are considering.
