What is gestational rhinitis?

Gestational rhinitis is a condition characterized by nasal congestion, sneezing and a runny nose during pregnancy without an infection or allergy. These symptoms can occur at any time during pregnancy, but they are common in the second and third trimesters.

During pregnancy, levels of estrogen and progesterone increase. These hormones can lead to swelling and increased blood flow to the nasal mucosa, resulting in nasal congestion. Total blood volume increases during pregnancy, which also contributes to the swelling of the nasal mucosa.

You can recognize pregnancy-related rhinitis by a persistent nasal congestion that is not caused by a cold or allergies. There is a discharge of clear, watery mucus from the nose and frequent sneezing with no apparent cause. Finally, there is a feeling of fullness or pressure in the sinuses.

Although gestational rhinitis usually goes away after delivery, there are some measures that can provide relief. A saline solution can help rinse and moisten the nasal passages. Using a humidifier in the bedroom can help keep the air moist and relieve symptoms. Smoke, strong odors and other irritants can worsen symptoms and should be avoided.
