What is the difference between coronavirus and COVID-19?

The COVID-19 virus was first called the coronavirus because it belongs to the group of coronaviruses. The coronaviruses cause respiratory infections and gripe complaints. The new virus is now called COVID-19, but it is actually an abbreviation for COVID-19, which stands for COronaVIrus Disease 2019.

The real name of the virus is SARS-CoV-2 (formerly 2019-nCoV). It is a virus from the genus betacoronaviruses. These viruses belong to the positive single-stranded RNA viruses. They got their name because of the wreath around the virus particles. In Latin, wreath is called corona. The first observation of the virus dates from December 30, 2019 in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The virus caused an outbreak of COVID-19 among visitors and workers at the Wuhan seafood market.
