How long does a coronavirus infection last?
The duration of an infection with the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) can vary depending on several factors such as the severity of the disease, the variant of the virus, and the overall health of the person.
The time between exposure to the virus and the onset of symptoms, known as the incubation period, usually ranges from 2 to 14 days. Most people develop symptoms within 4 to 5 days of exposure.
In mild to moderate COVID-19 cases, symptoms usually last 1 to 2 weeks. Symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue, and loss of taste or smell usually improve within this time. In severe cases, especially in patients who require hospital care, symptoms can last 3 to 6 weeks or longer. Hospitalization may be necessary for complications such as breathing problems.
People with COVID-19 are generally considered contagious from about 2 days before they develop symptoms until about 10 days after symptoms begin. In severe cases, or in people with weakened immune systems, contagiousness may last longer.
Most people clear the virus from their bodies within a few weeks, and they recover completely. However, some people, even after a mild infection, may experience persistent symptoms such as fatigue, difficulty breathing, and difficulty concentrating. These persistent symptoms, known as Long COVID or post-COVID syndrome, can last for months.
