Does magnesium work against chilblains?
Chilblains are a painful inflammatory reaction of small blood vessels in the skin that occurs when exposed to cold and dampness. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, itching, and in some cases blisters or skin ulcers.
Treatment for chilblains usually involves avoiding cold and damp conditions, keeping the affected areas warm, and in some cases, using medication.
There is no strong scientific evidence that specifically points to the use of magnesium as an effective treatment for chilblains. However, magnesium does have some properties that may indirectly contribute to the overall health of the blood vessels and skin. Magnesium helps relax blood vessels, which may contribute to better blood flow. Better blood flow may theoretically help prevent the vascular reactions that cause chilblains.
Although magnesium offers several health benefits, there is no specific evidence that it is directly effective for treating chilblains. Current recommended treatments focus more on avoiding cold exposure and improving blood flow through other means.
