High bloodpressure
From middle age onwards, many people develop high blood pressure. Why does this happen and what can you do about it?
We speak of high blood pressure if your blood pressure is 14 over 9 or more. Usually there is no cause for high blood pressure and you usually don't feel anything. But the long-term consequences are serious. You run an increased risk of cerebral hemorrhage, stroke, heart attack and damage to the kidneys and eyes. Your heart will also show aging signs more quickly with long-term high blood pressure, which will deteriorate its pumping function.
What can you do about it yourself? Limit your weight, stop smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, limit salt consumption to 6 grams per day, follow a Mediterranean diet, do more exercise and reduce stress through relaxation.
If this does not bring your blood pressure under control or if your blood pressure is already much higher to begin with (e.g. 16/10), it is best to go to the doctor immediately for treatment.
