What is the use of an advance directive?

Every adult in Belgium has the possibility to draw up a will in which he requests that euthanasia be applied if one loses consciousness irreversibly. However, this only applies to comatose patients and not in the case of dementia, for example.

The declaration of intent must be put down on paper in the presence of two adult witnesses. At least one of these witnesses may not be an heir or have a material interest in the death of the patient.

The declaration of intent can also be registered with the municipality. Such a declaration of intent is valid for a maximum of 5 years. It must therefore be renewed in good time. The person concerned can also withdraw the declaration of intent at any time.

The prior declaration of intent can only be taken into account if the patient suffers from a serious and incurable condition caused by accident or illness and is no longer conscious and this condition is irreversible. More information about the end of life can be found at www.leif.be.
