Shingles

Shingles is better known as zona. But what exactly is it and how do you get it?

Zona is a skin infection caused by the Herpes Zoster virus. The infection extends over a well-defined area of skin corresponding to a dermatome. Such a dermatome is the part of the skin that is innervated by one nerve.

The infection often starts with irritation and pain. After a few days, the skin will turn red and blisters will appear. When the blisters open, they may form scabs. After 2 to 3 weeks, all lesions have healed. But the affected area may continue to hurt for a long time.

The lesions resemble chickenpox because they are caused by the same virus. Only people who have ever had chickenpox can get zona. After chickenpox, the virus remains in the nerve pathways and can become active again during periods of serious illness, stress, fatigue or debilitation. In case of such an infection it is always recommended to consult your doctor.
