About 80,000 Belgians have epilepsy. But what exactly is epilepsy and how do you get it?

Epilepsy is popularly known as a falling disease. An abnormality in the brain causes abnormal synchronized activity of brain cells. Some people are born with epilepsy. But epilepsy can also be the result of a birth injury, a stroke, a brain tumor or an encephalitis.

Some people feel their epileptic attack coming. But there will always be a temporary reduction in consciousness as well as a loss of control of some muscles. In a generalized attack, the victim will exhibit frequent muscle contractions as well as tongue bite and urine loss. Sometimes the attack is limited to a loss of consciousness (absence) or contractions of one limb.

In the event of a generalized seizure, immediately call the emergency services 112 and ensure the safety of the victim. To avoid tongue bite, do not insert objects between the teeth.
