Thyroid

The thyroid gland plays a major role in metabolism in humans. But what can go wrong if the thyroid gland does not work properly?

The thyroid gland is located at the base of the neck. It produces thyroid hormones such as triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). They stimulate metabolism and growth. The thyroid gland in the brain is under the control of the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland.

If the thyroid gland works too fast, too many thyroid hormones are produced and we speak of hyperthyroidism. If it works too slowly, insufficient hormones are produced and we speak of hypothyroidism.

If the thyroid gland works too fast, this can manifest itself in weight loss, diarrhea, palpitations and nervousness. If he works too slowly, this can manifest itself in weight gain, constipation, fatigue and depression. Your doctor can check the functioning of your thyroid gland with a simple blood test and, if necessary, prescribe medication.
