How can we prevent dementia?
Dementia cannot be completely prevented, but there are several strategies and lifestyle changes that can reduce the risk or delay its onset.
Physical activity is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of dementia. This can include walking, biking, swimming, or other forms of aerobic exercise.
A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, nuts, and olive oil, such as the Mediterranean diet, is associated with a lower risk of dementia. Limiting your intake of saturated fats, processed foods, and sugar may also help reduce your risk of dementia.
Cognitive stimulation through education, puzzles, reading, and other intellectual activities can help keep your brain sharp.
Regular contact with others and maintaining social connections may also protect against dementia. Social interaction stimulates your brain. Untreated hearing loss is associated with a higher risk of dementia.
Managing high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes can reduce your risk of vascular dementia and other forms of cognitive decline.
Smoking is a major risk factor for dementia. Quitting smoking can improve brain health and reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Excessive alcohol use can cause brain damage and increase the risk of dementia. Moderation or abstinence is recommended.
