What is razor burn and how can you prevent it?
Razor burn, a common form of skin irritation after shaving, can be painful and uncomfortable. Fortunately, there are several ways to prevent razor burn. Here are some tips and guidelines to minimize or prevent razor burn.
Razor burn occurs because your hair follicles are damaged when shaving. To prevent this, wash your face or the area to be shaved with warm water beforehand to remove dirt. This helps to open the pores and prepare the skin for shaving. Warm water also softens the skin and hair.
A warm shower or applying a warm, wet washcloth to the skin for a few minutes can help.
Make sure your razor is sharp and clean. A dull razor can cause irritation. Replace your razor regularly.
Use plenty of shaving foam or gel and shave in the direction of hair growth. Do not press too hard on the razor and rinse with cold water. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing. This reduces the chance of further irritation. Apply a moisturizing lotion or aftershave balm that is free of alcohol. If your skin is prone to razor burn, use a product with soothing ingredients such as hydrocortisone cream. Avoid scented products.
