How dangerous is a nose fracture?

Kylian Mbappé suffered a fractured nose during the European Championship match between Austria and France. Colloquially we know this as a nasal fracture or a broken nose.

A fracture of the nose can vary in severity depending on the nature and location of the fracture, as well as any associated injuries. In general, the following factors can determine the severity of a nasal fracture. A simple nasal fracture without displacement is usually less serious and can often be repaired without surgery. A complex fracture with displaced bone fragments can lead to a deformed nose and often requires surgical correction.

If the fracture leads to a blockage of the nasal passages, it can make breathing difficult, increasing the severity of the situation and necessitating medical intervention. Nasal fractures may be associated with other facial injuries, such as eye sockets, cheekbones, or concussions, increasing the severity and complicating treatment.

We should think of a nose fracture in case of trauma to the nose where pain, swelling, nosebleeds or bruising occur around the nose or eyes. For simple fractures, ice application and pain relief are sufficient. Complex fractures may require surgical intervention.

If you suspect a nasal fracture, it is always advisable to consult a doctor for a correct diagnosis and treatment plan. Radiological tests such as X-rays or a CT scan may be necessary to determine the severity of the fracture.
