For which diseases can foot reflexology be used?
Foot reflexology, also known as reflex zone therapy, is an alternative medicine that assumes that certain points on the feet correspond to organs and systems in the body. By applying pressure to these points with the thumb and fingers, it is believed that you can influence and improve the health of these organs and systems.
Foot reflexology has its roots in ancient civilizations such as Egypt, China and India. Modern reflexology was largely developed by American physiotherapist Eunice Ingham in the 1930s.
The theory behind reflexology is based on the flow of energy in the body. Reflexologists believe that blockages in this energy flow lead to health problems. By massaging the feet, this energy flow can be restored and blockages can be removed.
There are also foot reflexology cards. These maps show the foot as a mirror of the body, with specific areas on the feet corresponding to different organs and body parts. For example, the tips of the toes correspond to the head, and the arch of the foot to the spine.
Reflexology is used to treat a wide range of conditions, including stress, headaches, digestive problems, sleep disorders and chronic pain. It is also used to promote general relaxation and well-being.
The scientific evidence for the effectiveness of reflexology is non-existent.
