Is it safe to take Ozempic during pregnancy?
The use of Ozempic (semaglutide) during pregnancy is generally not recommended.
There is limited scientific research on the effects of Ozempic during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown that the drug can have harmful effects on the fetus, such as birth defects. Although these effects are not necessarily the same in humans, Ozempic is considered a risk during pregnancy due to the lack of sufficient data in pregnant women.
The available data suggest that the use of Ozempic during pregnancy may lead to possible risks to the unborn baby, such as developmental abnormalities or other complications. Both the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other health authorities advise against the use of Ozempic during pregnancy unless the potential benefit to the mother outweighs the risk to the fetus.
In addition, women who take Ozempic and stop taking it because of pregnancy have a greater than normal weight gain due to pregnancy. This too can cause complications during pregnancy. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor.
Ozempic is generally not considered safe for use during pregnancy due to the lack of data and potential risk to the fetus. It is essential to consult your doctor to find the best treatment option for your situation if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
