Can curcumin boost your immunity?

Turmeric may help strengthen the immune system, thanks to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the active substance curcumin.

Curcumin is known for its ability to reduce the production of pro-inflammatory substances such as cytokines, thus suppressing inflammation in the body. This would have a positive effect on the immune response.

Some studies suggest that curcumin can modulate the immune system by influencing both the innate and adaptive immune response. This means that it can support the functioning of various immune cells, such as T cells, B cells and macrophages. Curcumin can also help combat oxidative stress, which is important for a healthy immune system.

Although this sounds promising, the results of clinical studies have been disappointing, mainly due to the low bioavailability of curcumin in the body. It is not easily absorbed, which can limit its effectiveness. It has never been shown that people who use turmeric have fewer infections than other people.

Turmeric is delicious as an ingredient in dishes, but no health effects can be attributed to it and it is not a miracle cure for boosting immunity.
