Can curcumine prevent dementia?
Turmeric, and specifically the active ingredient curcumin contained in it, is said to have a beneficial effect on the brain and may help prevent or delay dementia.
Curcumin is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may play a role in reducing inflammation and amyloid plaque accumulation, which are implicated in Alzheimer’s disease, a common form of dementia.
While laboratory and animal studies are promising, human evidence is very limited and not conclusive enough to recommend turmeric as a preventative measure against dementia. Many clinical studies face challenges such as the low bioavailability of curcumin in the body, meaning it is difficult for our system to absorb.
In short, while turmeric shows potential for its neuroprotective properties, more research is needed to definitively conclude that it can prevent dementia. Until then, turmeric cannot be recommended as a proven way to reduce the risk of dementia.
