Are bald men at greater risk of prostate cancer?
Men who are bald, especially those with some form of baldness, may have an increased risk of prostate cancer. Research suggests that there is a link between baldness and prostate cancer, although the exact mechanism is not fully understood.
The link appears to involve the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a byproduct of testosterone. This hormone plays a role in both hair loss and the development of prostate cancer. In men with a genetic predisposition to baldness, it is thought that elevated DHT levels may contribute to both hair loss and an increased risk of prostate cancer.
However, it is important to emphasize that baldness is only one of many factors that can affect prostate cancer risk. Age, genetics, lifestyle, and family history all play a role in overall risk.
