How can I get infected with the monkeypox virus?
You can become infected with the monkeypox virus through close contact with an infected person, animal or contaminated material.
The monkeypox virus can be transmitted through direct contact with the rash or blisters of an infected person. This can happen through touching, hugging, kissing, or sexual contact. The virus can also spread through respiratory droplets (such as saliva) during prolonged face-to-face contact. For example, this can happen when you are standing close to someone who is coughing or sneezing.
You can catch the virus through contact with objects such as bedding, clothing, or towels that have been used by an infected person. In areas where the virus is endemic (mainly parts of Africa), infection can also occur through contact with infected animals, such as rodents or primates, or by eating undercooked meat from infected animals.
People with weakened immune systems, children, and people who have close contact with infected people are at higher risk of serious infection. The risk of infection increases in situations where physical contact is frequent. To reduce the risk of infection, it is important to avoid close contact with infected people, maintain hygiene and take protective measures in risk areas.
If you think you may be infected, it is important to contact a doctor and take measures to prevent further spread.
