Can someone have monkeypox without knowing it?
It is possible to have monkeypox without knowing it right away. In some cases, people can be infected with the monkeypox virus and experience only mild symptoms that can easily be overlooked. There are even reports of asymptomatic cases, although these are rare.
Most people who become infected with the monkeypox virus develop symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches and a rash. However, in some cases, the symptoms may be mild and not immediately recognizable as monkeypox. This can lead to someone having the disease without realizing it, especially if the typical rash is absent or barely present.
People who do not realize they are infected may inadvertently spread the virus to others. This is especially relevant in situations where there is close contact, as monkeypox is mainly transmitted via skin-to-skin contact, bodily fluids and droplet infection. On the other hand, it is believed that people with symptoms spread the virus.
Although most people with monkeypox develop clear symptoms, it is possible that someone is infected without realizing it. Milder symptoms or even asymptomatic infections are possible, but less common.
