What can you do about cauliflower ears?
Cauliflower ears can occur after repeated trauma to the ear, leading to blood pooling and deformation of the cartilage. If the condition is not treated promptly, the deformity can become permanent.
Applying ice immediately after an injury can help reduce swelling and pain, although it cannot completely prevent a hematoma from forming. Avoid activities that may put extra pressure or impact on the ear until it has fully healed.
If a hematoma (collection of blood) forms after an injury, prompt medical treatment is essential. A doctor can drain the accumulated blood using a needle or a small incision.
After drainage, a compression bandage is often applied to prevent the hematoma from returning and to keep the ear in the correct shape as it heals. After drainage, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection. Regular checkups may be necessary to ensure that the ear is healing properly and that no new blood is accumulating.
For people who play sports that put the ears at risk of trauma, such as wrestling, boxing, or rugby. Wearing special head or ear protectors can significantly reduce the risk of injury.
If cauliflower ear is not treated in time and the cartilage is already deformed, plastic surgery may be necessary. A surgeon can correct or remove the deformed cartilage to improve the shape of the ear.
