What is cysticercosis?

Cysticercosis is an infection caused by the larvae of the pork tapeworm. This disease occurs when people ingest the eggs of the tapeworm, often by consuming contaminated food or water, or by contact with contaminated surfaces.

People can ingest pork tapeworm eggs by consuming contaminated food or water, or by coming into contact with contaminated feces. The eggs are often introduced into the body through poor hygiene practices. After the eggs are ingested, they enter the intestines, where they hatch and develop into larvae. These larvae can migrate through the intestinal wall and be spread throughout the body via the bloodstream.

If the larvae burrow into the brain, it can cause neurological symptoms such as seizures, headaches, confusion, weakness, and in severe cases it can be fatal. If the cysts are in the eyes, it can cause visual disturbances, double vision, or even blindness. In muscles, it can result in lumps or swellings that are sometimes painful, but often remain asymptomatic.

Treatment for cysticercosis depends on the severity and location of the infection. Antiparasitic medications such as albendazole or praziquantel are often used to kill the larvae. In addition, anti-inflammatory drugs such as corticosteroids and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to control symptoms. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove cysts.
