Is still water healthier than sparkling water?
Whether still water is healthier than sparkling water depends on several factors, including personal preference, health status, and specific dietary needs.
Sparkling water has a lower pH than still water, meaning it is slightly more acidic. This acidity can contribute to the erosion of tooth enamel when consumed frequently, especially if there are added acids or sugars present, such as in flavored sparkling waters. Still water has a neutral pH and is not harmful to tooth enamel, making it a safer choice for your teeth when consumed long-term.
Sparkling water can cause bloating or gas in some people due to the carbon dioxide (CO2) in the water. For people with digestive issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), sparkling water can worsen symptoms. Still water is often better tolerated by people with sensitive bowels because it is carbonated.
Both types of water are equally hydrating. There is no difference in hydration levels between still and sparkling water, unless you drink less water due to the bloating feeling if it is sparkling water.
Some commercial brands may add sodium or other minerals to sparkling water, which may be a factor to consider for some people, such as those with hypertension. Still water is generally free of additives, unless it is mineral water, which may naturally contain minerals depending on the source.
