Do Viagra users get less dementia?

There is some evidence that the use of Viagra (sildenafil) may play a role in reducing the risk of dementia.

A study published in 2021 suggested that people who used sildenafil may have a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease. This study found that sildenafil users were up to 69% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease compared to non-users .

Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, works by increasing blood flow, which can help improve blood flow to the brain. Good blood circulation is crucial for brain health. Research shows that sildenafil may affect the buildup of amyloid and tau proteins in the brain. These proteins play a major role in the development of Alzheimer’s. Sildenafil may inhibit the formation of these harmful protein deposits.

While the results are promising, more research is needed to definitively determine whether Viagra actually helps prevent dementia or Alzheimer’s. The study was observational in nature, meaning that no direct causal link can be established. In addition, clinical studies are needed to further substantiate this hypothesis.
