What is grossophobia?

Grossophobia is the term that refers to discrimination, prejudice or negative attitudes towards people who are overweight or obese. It is a specific form of body discrimination, in which people are judged, stigmatized or excluded based on their weight or body size.

People who are overweight are often stigmatized as lazy, unhealthy, or less successful, even when there is no evidence to support these assumptions. Studies show that people with obesity often receive less adequate health care due to biases from health care providers. Grossophobia can lead to psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

Grossophobia is often fueled by cultural norms and beauty ideals that glorify thinness and condemn obesity. This can spill over into the media, fashion industry, and even personal relationships.

There is increasing attention to the harmful effects of grossophobia. Scientists are calling for more awareness and breaking down these prejudices, as they not only cause social exclusion, but also have negative consequences for the mental and physical health of those affected.
