Does ginger tea help with cough?

Ginger tea is said to help relieve cough symptoms. Ginger is said to have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties, which are said to help soothe the throat and relieve coughs, especially when you have a cold or irritation of the respiratory tract.

Ginger does indeed contain compounds such as gingerols and shogaols, which are said to have anti-inflammatory effects. However, the scientific evidence for this is insufficient.

Ginger is said to have natural antibacterial and antiviral properties that are said to help fight the underlying infections that are causing the cough, such as colds or flu. Again, the scientific evidence for this is not solid.

Warm ginger tea can soothe the throat and reduce irritation, which helps to relieve the cough. This is particularly useful for a dry or tickly cough.

Although ginger tea can provide relief, it is not a direct cough suppressant like medications (e.g. dextromethorphan or noscapine). It mainly provides support by reducing the underlying irritation.

For severe infections or persistent coughs, it is important to seek medical advice, as ginger tea will not be sufficient to treat the cause of the cough.

Ginger tea can certainly be helpful for coughs, but it is no better than any hot drink.
