Can foods with selenium prevent fatty liver disease?
The contribution of nuts, mushrooms and grains rich in selenium to the prevention of fatty liver disease is very limited, but they should be considered as part of a broader, healthy diet.
Selenium is an essential trace mineral that plays an important role in the body’s antioxidant defenses, particularly through its function in glutathione peroxidase, an enzyme that helps neutralize free radicals and protect cells from oxidative damage.
Oxidative stress is a major factor in the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Studies suggest that selenium, through its antioxidant activity, may help protect the liver from the damage that oxidative stress can cause. This makes selenium-rich foods such as nuts (especially Brazil nuts), mushrooms, and whole grains potentially beneficial for liver health.
While selenium can be beneficial, it should be noted that too much selenium can also be harmful, as it can lead to toxicity and other health problems. It is therefore important to consume selenium-rich foods in moderation and aim for a balanced diet that includes all the essential nutrients.
