Can you apply Vicks VapoRub to the soles of your feet to reduce coughing?
Many people use Vicks VapoRub on the soles of their feet as a home remedy for coughing. However, there is no scientific evidence that this is actually effective.
If any effect is observed, it will be a placebo effect that can be explained by the menthol smell, which gives a soothing feeling and offers the idea of relief.
Menthol in Vicks can calm the airways in some people due to the smell, but in others it will irritate the airways, causing them to cough more or for longer. Applying it to the soles of the feet and covering it with socks can at most give a placebo and a soothing feeling.
Do not use it on children under 2 years old. The strong smell can cause breathing problems in them. For prolonged or severe coughing, it is always better to consult a doctor.
