Is vitamin B3 useful in the treatment of COPD?

Vitamin B3 (niacin) is being studied for possible benefits in COPD because it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. While there is some evidence that niacin can reduce oxidative stress, its use in COPD treatment has not yet been found to be useful.

Vitamin B3 is found in small amounts in dairy products and is also sold as a supplement to combat fatigue.

A recent study gave 20 patients with COPD high doses of B3 and compared the results with 20 COPD patients who did not receive the tablets. The participants who took the B3 had significantly fewer inflammatory cells in their lungs.

However, the study is too small to draw conclusions, especially because the impact on the disease and survival was not investigated.

Patients should definitely not take vitamin B3 on their own because it can be dangerous. Excessive amounts of vitamin B3 can lead to headaches, vomiting and palpitations. Consultation with a doctor is essential before taking supplements.
