Can palmitoylethanolamide be used for neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia?

Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is a fatty acid amide that occurs naturally in the body and is involved in regulating inflammation and pain. It is often cited as a possible support for chronic pain, including neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia.

PEA has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties and can reduce excessive activation of mast cells and microglia (immune cells in the nervous system), which contributes to pain relief.

Clinical studies suggest that PEA can reduce the intensity of neuropathic pain, especially in conditions such as diabetic neuropathy, sciatica, and postherpetic neuralgia. The effect may vary depending on the cause and severity of the pain. PEA is generally considered safe with few side effects, as it is a natural substance in the body.

There is insufficient scientific evidence to consider PEA as an adjunct in the treatment of neuropathic pain and possibly fibromyalgia. Always consult a doctor or specialist before using PEA, especially if you are taking other medications or have underlying conditions.
