Are DNA methylation tests useful?
DNA methylation tests may be useful, depending on the purpose of the test and the context in which it is used. Their application in prevention and health promotion has not been demonstrated.
DNA methylation plays a role in aging and diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders. Some tests claim to measure biological age based on epigenetic markers.
Abnormal methylation patterns can aid in early detection of certain cancers, such as breast cancer, colon cancer, and lung cancer. However, these tests have not been shown to be more useful than current cancer screening methods.
Some commercial tests link methylation patterns to diet, fitness, and lifestyle choices. However, the scientific validity of many commercial tests is still limited.
DNA methylation changes with aging and environmental factors, so test results can be dynamic. Many commercial tests are not approved by regulatory agencies and lack clinical validation. While abnormal methylation patterns may indicate increased risk, they do not always provide directly applicable treatment options.
DNA methylation tests that predict biological age or health lack sufficient scientific support. If you are considering having a test, it is wise to discuss this with a doctor.
