Can herbs cleanse your liver?
The idea that certain herbs can cleanse or detoxify the liver is common in naturopathy. It is important to realize that no herb can truly detoxify the liver because your liver is already your detoxifier. Even supporting liver function cannot be expected from herbs.
There have been a number of studies conducted with herbs that were thought to have a positive effect on liver health, particularly in the areas of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and cell regeneration support.
Well-known herbs that are said to support your liver are milk thistle (Silybum marianum), dandelion root, turmeric (Curcuma longa), artichoke leaf and chlorella (a type of algae). None of these herbs have ever been shown to have a benefit for the liver in scientific research.
Detoxification is a vague concept. The liver is already continuously detoxifying your blood from waste products, alcohol, medicines, etc. Herbs are not without risk. Some can actually cause liver problems if used incorrectly or in combination with medication. Healthy living helps your liver the most. Think of not too much alcohol, few processed sugars, enough sleep, exercise and healthy fats.
If you really think your liver needs support (e.g. due to medication, alcohol use, fatigue or liver disease), definitely consult a doctor.
