Does QMR help against dry eyes?
Quantum Molecular Resonance (QMR) is a medical technology in which a device emits very specific electromagnetic waves (in the radio frequency range) with the aim of mimicking the natural resonance frequencies of molecular bonds in cells.
This would stimulate cellular processes such as tissue repair, inflammation reduction, and regeneration, without a heat effect (unlike radiofrequency therapy, which primarily generates heat).
A systematic review shows that QMR electrical stimulation provides a limited improvement in subjective symptoms of dry eye, but there is no statistically significantly better outcome for tear film stability and corneal damage compared to placebo.
A fair amount of research is available demonstrating symptomatic relief with QMR treatment for dry eye. In addition, there are indications that some objective signs also improve, and that anti-inflammatory effects may occur. Safety appears to be good.
However, the quality of the evidence is still limited (small studies, varying protocols, and sometimes no placebo control). Therefore, larger, well-designed RCTs are needed to draw strong conclusions. Until then, the use of QMR remains unrecommended, primarily because it does give the sensation that the eyes are not dry, but protection against eye damage caused by dryness has not been sufficiently demonstrated.
