Do adaptogenic mushrooms have health benefits?
Adaptogen is a term from phytotherapy (herbal medicine). It refers to substances that help the body adapt to stress (physical, mental, emotional) and help maintain homeostasis (balance).
Adaptogenic mushrooms are fungi (not plants) that contain bioactive compounds with a so-called stress-regulating and immunomodulatory effect. For example, Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is said to have immunomodulatory, stress-reducing, and anti-inflammatory properties.
The term adaptogen is not an official medical classification, but there are several clinical and preclinical studies on bioactive compounds in these mushrooms (such as beta-glucans, triterpenes, and polysaccharides). Studies show that these adaptogenic mushrooms influence certain substances that modulate (balance) the immune system, provide antioxidant protection, and influence stress hormones. However, studies demonstrating a beneficial effect in humans are not scientifically substantiated.
Furthermore, there are concerns about the safety of these products. They are often derived from traditional Chinese, Tibetan, or Siberian folk medicine. Their quality and purity vary widely, and interactions with medications such as cholesterol-lowering and blood thinners may occur. Science does not support their effectiveness in humans. Therefore, they are not miracle cures or replacements for conventional treatment.
