Does magnesium oil help your baby sleep better?
The idea that magnesium oil helps a baby sleep better is common in blogs and social media, but let's look at it scientifically.
Magnesium oil isn't actually an oil, but a strong solution of magnesium chloride in water. It's applied to the skin of the feet in the hope that magnesium will be absorbed through the skin. There's no strong scientific evidence that magnesium is absorbed through the skin in significant quantities. Most studies show that magnesium is absorbed effectively primarily through food.
There are no clinical studies demonstrating that magnesium oil helps babies sleep better. Research on magnesium and sleep focuses primarily on adults with deficiencies, not on healthy babies.
Baby skin is much more sensitive than adult skin and can be irritated more easily by concentrated magnesium solutions. The risk of overdose through the skin is probably not high, but irritation or allergic reactions are possible.
In healthy babies fed a normal diet or formula, a magnesium deficiency is very rare. Therefore, there's usually no need to supplement with magnesium.
What does help babies sleep better? Good sleep routines (fixed bedtimes, quiet environment) and a good sleeping environment (on the back, in your own bed, without loose blankets, in a dark, quiet room) are certainly recommended.
