Is castor oil good for your hair?

Castor oil can be good for your hair, but it's important to understand what it does and doesn't do. Here's an overview based on scientific and dermatological sources.

Castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid that retains moisture and makes hair shinier. The oil forms a protective layer around the hair shaft, which can help reduce breakage from combing or heat. Castor oil is said to have mild antibacterial and antifungal properties, which are said to help with a dry or flaky scalp. However, scientific evidence for the latter is not robust.

There is no scientific evidence that castor oil accelerates hair growth or stimulates new hair growth. It can make hair appear healthier, but it does not change your growth rate or hair follicles. Excessive use can actually be counterproductive. The oil is thick and can clog scalp pores. The oil may cause irritation or allergies in some people.
