Is rhodiola helpful for stress and concentration problems?
Rhodiola rosea is also known as arctic root, and golden root. It's an herb often promoted for improving stress, fatigue, and concentration. However, scientific evidence regarding its effectiveness is inconclusive.
Rhodiola rosea is a plant from cold regions (Siberia, Scandinavia, the Alps), the root of which contains substances such as rosavins and salidroside. These substances are believed to help the body adapt to stress and fatigue.
Many studies are small, short-term, not placebo-controlled, and often sponsored by the manufacturer. Differences in quality and dosage (200–600 mg/day) make comparison difficult. Long-term effects have hardly been studied. Not all supplements contain standardized amounts of rosavins/salidroside. Many studies have only been conducted on animals.
Rhodiola is generally well tolerated. Mild side effects such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, or restlessness occur at high doses. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Concurrent use with antidepressants or other serotonergic medications may cause interactions.
Rhodiola rosea may reduce mild stress and fatigue and temporarily improve concentration in some people, but the effect is no greater than what would be expected from a placebo. It is certainly not a natural miracle cure.
