Is white noise a miracle cure for insomnia?
White noise isn't a miracle cure for insomnia, but it can help in some situations, especially for people sensitive to ambient noise. The effect is limited, not universal, and scientific evidence is mixed.
White noise can drown out sounds like traffic, neighbors, or a partner's movements, making sleep less likely to be disrupted. Some people find a stable sound environment soothing. Studies show that this can help individuals fall asleep faster.
There is considerable experience with white noise, especially with children and babies, but the evidence remains limited and the scientific research is inconclusive. It is even discouraged for children and babies because high noise levels (>50 dB) can cause long-term hearing damage or stress reactions.
Systematic reviews show that white noise does not improve sleep time or sleep quality in the general population. Some studies find that continuous sound exposure, such as white noise, increases brain activity and can stimulate micro-awakenings. Long-term use can make it impossible for someone to sleep without sound.
