Does methylene blue boost memory?

Methylene blue has been shown in laboratory studies to have a possible positive effect on memory. However, the effect in daily practice has not been demonstrated.

Methylene blue improves the efficiency of mitochondria, the powerhouses of cells. Good mitochondrial function is essential for the brain, which uses a lot of energy.

Methylene blue has been shown to improve signal transmission between neurons in the brain. This can contribute to better memory and learning.

Some studies have shown that methylene blue can increase blood flow to brain areas involved in memory and learning, such as the hippocampus.

Methylene blue can have side effects, such as nausea, increased blood pressure or, at high doses, neurological problems. It should also not be combined with certain medications, such as serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), as this increases the risk of serotonin syndrome.

There is some evidence that methylene blue can improve memory, mainly in animal studies and some small studies in humans. However, more extensive and controlled clinical studies are needed to further confirm its effectiveness and safety in humans.

If you are considering using methylene blue for memory enhancement, consult a doctor first. It is not a drug to experiment with due to possible side effects and interactions with other medications.
