Can coffee prevent intestinal cramps?
Coffee is generally not known to prevent intestinal cramps. In fact, in some cases, coffee can actually contribute to intestinal cramps, especially in people with sensitive stomachs or intestines.
Coffee stimulates digestion and can activate the intestines, which can lead to faster bowel movements or even diarrhea in some people. This effect can be especially strong due to caffeine, which speeds up peristalsis (the movement of the intestinal muscles).
Coffee stimulates the muscles in the large intestine, which can relieve constipation in some people, but it can also lead to abdominal cramps or a sudden urge to go to the toilet. Coffee increases the production of stomach acid, which can cause heartburn or stomach complaints in sensitive people. This can also indirectly lead to cramps in the intestines. People with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or sensitive intestines can suffer from coffee, because caffeine irritates the intestines extra and can worsen cramps.
For some people, coffee can help with constipation because it stimulates the bowel movement. However, for people who are sensitive to the acids or caffeine in coffee, it can cause abdominal pain, cramps or other discomfort.
Coffee can have a stimulating effect on the intestines in some cases, but it is not known to specifically prevent intestinal cramps. In sensitive people, coffee can actually worsen intestinal complaints and cramps.
