Is Blue Monday really the most depressing day?

Blue Monday, usually the third Monday of January, is often called the most depressing day of the year. Although it is a well-known concept, there is no scientific basis to prove that this day is actually the most depressing.

Blue Monday was introduced in 2005 by British psychologist Cliff Arnall, commissioned by a travel agency. He used a (non-scientific) formula to calculate the most depressing day. The factors in the formula were bad weather, post-holiday blues, financial worries after the holidays, failed New Year's resolutions and lack of motivation.

Although these factors contribute to a feeling of gloom, the formula is widely regarded as pseudoscience. Shorter days and less sunlight can lead to seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which causes depressive feelings.

Many people experience financial pressure and social exhaustion after the holidays. If New Year's resolutions are difficult to keep, this can lead to disappointment. January is often associated with grey and cold weather, which can affect mood.

There is no evidence that people worldwide experience more depressive symptoms on this specific day. The term is often used by companies to promote products or services, such as holidays, gym memberships or self-help books. For people with real depression, their mood does not depend on a specific day.

Although Blue Monday symbolizes a recognizable feeling of winter gloom, it is mainly a marketing construct.
